Eva V - Costume Jewellery at Galerie Deletaille in Brussels

When I met Eva V. for the first time I was immediately taken in by her easy and open friendliness - and by the amazing necklace she wore. I was  - I hope, discreetly - gazing at it while we talked and my mind was wandering and wondering whether I had ever seen such extraordinary and individual pieces before. I had not. Next time we met, she wore another one and the third time I finally asked her, where and how she had found those one of a kind costume jewellery pieces, one more beautiful than the other. Easy: she produces them herself.

That mystery explained, I wanted to see and know more about them and Eva very kindly invited me to her Atelier, where I could hardly know where to look first, for all the colours, semi precious stones and very originally constructed necklaces and brooches of a very unique beauty.
Once you have attentively looked at a piece made by her, you will instantly recognise it - they are very much their own style and immediately recognisable. I find they remind me of the late antique mosaics of Ravenna and the glamour of Venice, I see a hint of South American Aztec aesthetics and  discover a well-known and dear southern German "baroque" feeling, a love for earthy colours and  dazzling stones - all of that put together delicately in rows and rows of amazing colour combinations and timeless elegance.  If I would not know better, one could think that Dolce and Gabbana in their latest discovery of Byzanz and its riches might have been inspired  by Eva's pieces before!

What makes me so convinced that her work is Art and not just some necklace you put on for a summer and throw away, is the fact that they suit all ages and all persons - always a sure sign of quality and sincerity -  and they do "make" each and everybody an individual in her own right. The pieces are very present, but do not overwhelm the personality of the woman who wears them, they make her more beautiful, more true, more present.  Put one such necklace on a beautiful girl of 20, with a crisp white t-shirt, jeans and great shoes and she is perfectly dressed - put it on a hard working director in her costume and you need nothing more to impress the board room and mark your point -  put it around the neck of a wonderful old lady with white hair in her cashmere turtle-neck and she will look adorable and unforgettable. Short: If you have an inclination to the evasive idea of Chic, here you go. Think of Diana Vreeland or good old Coco Chanel and you get the idea - the ladies who wear her pieces love them and know that their piece is unique.

I think a part of the secret lies in this uniqueness of each piece - there is never a second one, all of them are one of a kind and made by Eva alone - she sources the materials all by herself and the production process is something which would make it impossible to produce this jewellery mechanically - sometimes the way to put strings together or to include a stone at a place where it needs to be can take days and demands careful consideration.

The good news and also a reason for writing this post is that until the 24th of May there is a rare opportunity to see her pieces at the beautiful Gallery premises of Lin Deletaille in the heart of Brussels, right next to Park Egmont.

Eva V and Lin Deletaille
Eva herself will be there in the late afternoons with her very own touch of picking something up and draping it around your neck which wants you do scream with joy and chic. I could go on and on - better, if you have the opportunity of being in or around Brussels, go there and have a look yourself.....
I think her work deserves to be known not only in Brussels, but far beyond.

Favourite Colour: Green II

Forget me not

By now all of you have certainly understood, that green is one of my great favourite colours. I feel refreshed in studying Farrow&Ball colour charts and one of my most beloved shades are the green ones. Especially the grey greens and mute shades.

Now, as spring is coming without doubt, I wait impatiently for the fresh and lush green - almost neongreen! For once nature has got it right with the Spring/Summer 2012 Collections in Paris and London!

Wet Weekend at the Belgian Coast

You would think that august is a nice time to go to the beach. But apparently not in Belgium: I went to DEHAAN, or as the french say, "Le Cocq" -  more than happy to get a bit out of town, rain and computerprogramms.

And then, finally on my last day....

Voilà, the loveliest fresh weather and sky! And I headed back to rain, office and the usual supermarket.

Dogs...

Ploppy

Mick contemplating Life
Our dogs are growing old - and are more and more beloved.

An old dog is like a member of the family, you know his likes and dislikes, his naughty habits, like making pipi always at the same place of the curtain ( this means he is furious about something) - the cost of dry-cleaning...

Or the way they eat: in the morning one, in the evening the other - polishing off both portions of food, if we do not take care. Best incentive to eat is to provide a tiny piece of  Paté with the food. This does the trick for Plop to take his medication. He looks like a happy child, waiting for his favourite vitamin-sirop in the  morning.

If you take one on your lap, the other will immediately awake from his snoring depths and sit longingly at your feet. Then you get the very-sad-pug-look. Makes you feel awful. And you end up with two pugs in your lap and covered all over with tiny little hairs. Not for the faint hearted, indeed!

Plop feeling lonely
If one starts looking busy, prepares a bag or rustles along with keys, there are two happy chaps sitting tail wagging at the door. If you do not take them for a walk, be aware of hurt looks piercing your back...

They are both such personalities - very distinct different and very kind. The kindest dogs one can imagine.
And very hairy - we should get one Vacuumcleaner "Cats &Dogs" for free!!

My mother and me

This is my mother, painted in 1942, and  then me, painted by my grandmother when 3 years old.
She was a very very good portraitist...
Her aquarelles  are signed "ASR" - you recognize them immediately, when you have seen them once.

She painted in all Europe,  especially in Belgium and Germany - and also in the United States, especially in Washington political circles.  After WW II the family settled in Quebec, Canada, where she died in 1974.
Especially in Belgium are a  great number of her very best works. Is an old project of mine, to make a collection of them and perhaps organize an exhibition?

Holland House Library Suffers Damage 1940 London England
(copyright Hulton-Deutsch Collection/Corbis - VPM)
This picture is a postcard  I found in the Galerie de la Reine in Brussels. There is a lovely bookshop, which sells all sorts of Art books. It is one of my favourite places in Brussels and whenever I can, I have a good and interested look at the books. I fell over this picture more or less when I left and it mesmerized me immediately.  The tranquility with which the three gentlemen are looking at the books, amid all this destruction, is amazing. As if nothing would have happened - they look very interested at books, unexited and calm. Even if the ceiling does not exist any longer.
This is class indeed.

Becoming a favourite colour: BLUE

For almost 30 years I have not worn blue - apart from the rare jeans. Now, in my older days I come back to this pristine and so suitable colour - it is much softer than black and so chic, if not used in the ways of a school uniform or blue-blazer- grey-trousers-allround.  I always thought the latter one so boring for a one after 19years old - concerning the chaps.
But a dark blue dress of Diane Fürstenberg is another story! Or mixing black and blue, or prussian blue and brown. Just start to think different about The Blue(s) and a whole new world opens ( as if it would be always so easy?!)

More of the Life of a Dog

In my next life I will be a pug.
Easter Holidays are over, everybody is back to school and this is, how a pug does take advantage of the situation. Do admit, life is indeed unfair...

Erinnerungen an Rilke

Drawing by Gotthard Montgelas, 2011

" Rilke liebte alte Häuser, Einrichtungen und Gärten.
Am Ende seines Lebens plante er einen Rosengarten in seinem kleinen Schlösschen in der Schweiz anzulegen.
Die Zeichnung ist eine Erinnerung an die Welt, die er in seinen Gedichten und Werken geschaffen hat."*

For more information about his drawings and his work have a look at http://www.montgelasbauforschung.de/ and also at http://www.boxgallery.de/ - both based in Regensburg, Germany.

*Translation: "Rilke loved old houses, interiors and gardens. Towards the end of his life he planned a rosegarden at his countryhouse in Switzerland. The drawing is a remembrance to the world he created in his work."

My favourite colours - today: terracotta

I repeat: With a fading skincolour harsh colours do us no good. I used to love a vivid red, like a cherry red or even a bright red, as red as the firebrigade. But now this is getting more toned down. Not orange neither..

One of my favourite "jewels" are corals, the deep red one. In the summer, with a light tan and a white shirt, this colour is irresistible..

A bad picture of a favourite brooch I was given as present . I think it is from 1920ies.
Have to learn to work this photothing...

Pugs at home

Here I have the pleasure and honour to introduce to you our beloved Pugs, Micky and Ploppy. They are both 7 years old and adorable characters. Once a pug in your life and you are lost for any other dog. Loriot once said something like - I translate freely -  a live without pugs is possible but not desirable.

This is our pug Mick. He loves to sit in the sun and sleep.

And this is Ploppy. Who likes even more to sleep. Always. There will be more pictures as soon as I have this camera....

My favourite colours - today: green

Green is my favourite colour. Together with grey! And terracotta-red. And white.
These two pictures have been a "think- try-and-do-experience".
I know, nothing special, but I like the blurring of the different shades of green.

Tomorrow I´ll get out and get myself a small new camera!!!!
